Venous Insufficiency

What is Venous Insufficiency?

In order for the penis to reach and maintain sufficient hardness, it must have a healthy vascular structure. The fact that the arteries bringing blood to the penis bring enough blood initiates an erection in the penis and the pressure inside the penis increases.

With this increased pressure, the closure of the valves of the veins carrying dirty blood from the penis and the continuity of the erection is ensured as a result of the high penile pressure. If there is leakage in the veins in the penis, erection cannot be achieved in sufficient time and hardness, this condition is called venous leakage or penile venous insufficiency.

Venous insufficiency is a condition that prevents blood from flowing properly through the veins. This is usually caused by valves in the veins (the vessels that carry blood back to the heart) not working properly.

How is Venous Insufficiency Diagnosed?

Patients should be examined for general health, existing vascular diseases, diabetes and neurological disorders. The presence of such diseases increases the likelihood of venous insufficiency. Penile Doppler ultrasonography and cavernosography have an important place in radiological examinations for the diagnosis of venous leakage.

These imaging studies are used to assess blood circulation and the overall health of the veins. It is of great importance in diagnosing the disease quickly and determining the correct treatment method. Since each individual’s health condition is different, doctors should plan such examinations individually and adjust them to the specific needs of patients.

What Causes Venous Insufficiency?

  • Diabetes
  • Vascular diseases,
  • Neurological causes,
  • Testosterone deficiency,
  • Radiotherapy to the pelvic region,
  • Stress and anxiety.

What Are Our Recommendations for Venous Insufficiency Treatment?

The lifestyle of people with erection problems plays a big role in the management of this problem. Erection problems are often seen in cases of erectile dysfunction caused by venous insufficiency and certain changes in the lifestyle of these patients can improve this condition.

First of all, diet should be emphasized. A proper and balanced diet is as important for sexual health as it is for the general health of the body. In particular, steps such as reducing processed foods and limiting fat and sugar consumption can be taken. In addition, adopting a diet based on vegetables and fruits helps to alleviate erection problems.

Physical activity is also an important factor in combating erectile dysfunction. Regular exercise improves erection quality by increasing blood circulation. Moderate intensity aerobic exercises are recommended at least three times a week. Alcohol and smoking also directly affect erection problems. Excessive consumption of alcohol can trigger erectile dysfunction.

Smoking, on the other hand, can cause erection problems as it has a constricting effect on blood vessels. Therefore, reducing or completely quitting alcohol and smoking will help alleviate this problem. These recommendations emphasize the need for a general lifestyle change.

However, the situation may be different for each patient and it is therefore important to consult with health professionals to determine the best approach.

How is Venous Insufficiency Surgery Performed?

We perform certain surgical procedures for patients with erectile dysfunction who have leaking penile veins and for whom other treatment methods are ineffective. In these operations, the veins in the dorsal region of the penis are ligated and cut, and we can also ligate smaller veins connected to these veins. As an alternative surgery, the veins can be compressed near the root of the corpus cavernosum.

In some cases, these two surgical procedures may be used together. After surgery, additional treatments are initiated to increase blood flow to the penis and promote erection. With methods such as ESWT, PRP and stem cells, we help to harden the penis. If there is no improvement in the patient as a result of all these treatments, we should turn to penile prosthesis as a last resort.
